FRYE
ELECTRIC
Ben Frye attended the Redwing College Guitar course in 1994, but grew up learning and experimenting under his father's supervision. Frye's guitar models feature bolt-on neck construction, Red Rhodes' Velvet Hammer or Lindy Fralin pickups, different electronic packages and hardware, and other customer specified options. Frye turns the necks, and carves and routs out the guitar bodies with templates and power tools instead of using CNC machines. The El Pique (last MSR was $1,300) is a double cutaway, strat-style solid body with a 25.5 in. scale. A single cutaway model, named the Over Easy (last MSR was $1,200 and up) is closer to a Tele-influenced model. The Over Easy is also offered with a carved maple top as the Extra Crispy model (last MSR was $1,800 and up), or as the Scully hollowbody (last MSR was $1,200). The Scully (named after the first person who ordered one, not the X-Files character) is fully hollow, with a solid back/sides and carved out top. Scully models feature a single f-hole, and are constructed of solid spruce, redwood, or cedar. The Epiphany (last MSR was $1,700) is a wide/thin (2 in.body depth) electric/acoustic model with a "No Tension Top," and offset soundhole. The Epiphany model has a bound top, three-per-side tuners, and Fishman Matrix pickup. Frye also offers a double cutaway solid body named the Top Tone, that features a 24.75 in.scale and a three-per-side headstock design (last MSR starting at $1,200). The Top Tone body shape is reminiscent of a LP Junior or a Rickenbacker. The Top Tone Ultra (last MSR was $1,900) has a bird's-eye maple neck, ebony fingerboard, wood binding, abalone inlay, and exotic wood top. Any guitar model could be converted to a 30 in.scale Baritone for an additional $250. Frye also offered his models with hollowed out tone chambers which accentuate acoustic properties (dubbed Fat Free) for an extra $100.
