S.D. CURLEE USA | ELECTRIC | Typical of the times when everybody thought that brass parts helped with sustaining properties, S.D. Curlee instruments featured a squared brass nut, brass bridge, brass neck plate and electronics cover. Necks consisted of hard rock maple, and bodies consisted of exotic woods like butcher block maple, brazilian or honduran mahogany, black walnut, purpleheart, koa, and (later models) poplar. Hardware included Schaller tuners, DiMarzio pickups, and BadAss bridges. Headstocks were 3+3 (2+2 on basses), and featured a master volume knob and a tone knob per pickup, as well as a pickup selector toggle. The neck sat halfway into the body in a channel, and had four bolts in a large rear plate (sort of a bolt-on/set-neck hybrid). Individual models are hard to determine, as there were some variations during production. At least 8 different models were named, although the first three (Standards I, II, and III) are the original models that the following five were variants of. Finally, as the company was closing down in 1982, Curlee built some Destroyer, Flying V, and other original shapes. | MISC. ELECTRIC MODELS | - various designs, mfg. 1975-1982. |
