PAUL REED SMITH GUITARS (PRS)
HARDWARE, WOOD, & DATING INFORMATION
In addition to a fairly straight forward serialization method (see PRS Serialization in the back of this text), there are a number of ways to supplement guitar dating by inspecting various features on the instrument. During late 1991, the sweet switch was discontinued. In 1991, PRS stopped offering Brazilian rosewood fingerboards and necks, and began offering very good quality Indian rosewood. Brazilian rosewood fingerboards are still available through limited edition models or custom-built models. During this time period, PRS began using mother-or-pearl inlay in place of abalone shell inlay on non-custom instruments. In 1993, PRS introduced the one piece stop tailpiece. In 1995, the large, long neck heel was introduced. The two-piece tremolo bridge replaced the one-piece tremolo bridge. Standard post-1985 Custom/Standard Model electronics/hardware included two PRS Hybrid pickups, 5-position rotary switch, volume control and sweet toggle switch, PRS tremolo system, Schaller/PRS locking tuners and low friction nut. A master tone pot (3 knobs total) replaced the sweet switch in November of 1991. Pickups were originally standard treble and standard bass. End slugs on T & B were changed in 1987 to reduce high end, these were changed on the CE, Custom and Standard to HFS Treble and Vintage Bass by November 1991.
