The Jupiter model (retail list $6,900) is the design that Southern started with. The three-inch deep AAA-grade Curly maple body is 13 in. wide across the lower bout, and features a 4/2 (per side tuners) headstock design, 20-fret ebony fingerboard with special Quasar position marker inlay, 3 coil-tapped Seymour Duncan humbuckers, and a bridge mounted piezo pickup. The center humbucker is a custom converted Woody acoustic guitar pickup. Controls include two 3-way toggles, two push/pull knobs, and a Pinky-Knob master volume control. This ingenious design is complemented by a gold plated Lyric tailpiece and banjo-style custom tuning pegs with abalone buttons. The Mars model is similar in construction, except features a Barcus Berry bridge transducer and a single coil-tapped mini-humbucker. Controls include a blend, push/pull tone, and Pinky Swell knobs. The Curly maple body is 1.75 in. deep, and the ebony fingerboard has the Mars Dot inlay pattern. Current list price is $3,300. The Venus model (retail list $4,500) is an acoustic/electric version of the Jupiter that features a split coil Johnny Smith pickup and an L.R. Baggs bridge transducer and preamp, and a 1.69 in. deep body. It is available in a 3 in. depth to accommodate an additional graphic EQ, or with an extra magnetic pickup and blend controls. The Lyric Lady (retail list $4,675) is a thicker body version made from hard maple, with a hollower construction and exquisite female figure pearl position markers on ebony. Humbucker pickup placement is conventional neck and bridge, with two coil top option and a blend with a Barcus Berry under saddle thin line pickup. It has no pinky knob and features chrome hardware and Steinberger tuners. The Saturn is a thin 1.75 in. Honduras mahogany body with multiple spiderweb-shaped chambers, under an exquisite book matched curly maple cap. The Saturn has a one-piece mahogany neck and Quazar fingerboard inlay on finest ebony. The double Johnny Smith custom "Duncan" pickups are coil tapped and floating. The Saturn is priced retail at $3,500. For a moderately priced custom guitar, the Saturn will play rings around its competitors. The Lyric Mercury solid body is offered in a swamp ash, poplar, alder, walnut, or cherry, with a maple or mahogany neck. The pickups are 6 pole piece coil-tapped humbuckers and a stop tail piece. The tuners are conventional Gotohs, and the specialty colors of clear or copper tone sparkle are offered ($1,800 retail price). | |
