 IBANEZ | | ELECTRIC: DESTROYER SERIES | | The first Destroyer model was numbered 2459 and was almost a direct copy of Gibson's Explorer. After the Gibson lawsuit in the late 1970s, production halted on this instrument in 1977. In 1980, a new "Destroyer II" series was introduced that had a slightly different Explorer-shaped body. Two models were available with the bolt-on DT50 and the set neck flame maple top DT400. These models were replaced respectively by the DT150 (one pickup, tremolo) and the nearly identical DT500 in 1982. A fifth model, called the DT155 with three pickups, was apparently produced during the same but no information appears in Ibanez's catalogs. In 1984, they redesigned the body to look more like a Dean ML and they were placed in Ibanez's X Series. Although these models (DT250, DT350, DG350) were derived from the Destroyer, they aren't actually called Destroyers in Ibanez's catalogs; however, most collectors refer to these guitars as Destroyers anyway. A Phil Collen Signature Destoyer was also produced with three humbucker pickups.
