HÖFNER | MODEL DATING INFORMATION | Höfner began installing adjustable truss-rods in their guitar necks beginning in 1960. Any model prior to that year will not have a truss-rod cover. Between the late 1950s and early 1970s, Höfner produced a number of semi-hollow or hollowbody electric guitars and basses that were in demand in England. English distribution was handled by Selmer of London, and specified models that were imported. In some cases, English models are certainly different from the domestic models offered in Germany. There will always be interest in Höfners; either Paul McCartney's earlier association with the Beatle Bass or the thrill of a Committee or Golden Höfner. From the late 1960s to the early 1980s, the company produced a number of guitar models based on popular American designs. In addition, Höfner also built a number of better quality original models such as Alpha, Compact, and Razorwood from the late 1970s to the mid-1980s. Many Höfner guitars and basses are not marked with a model name or number, so it may be difficult to correctly identify your instrument correctly. The Blue Book of Electric Guitars recommends getting several opinions when it comes to model identification and pricing. Somemodels listed have not been individually priced. Demand is highest in the category of "Violin" basses and weakest in the category of solid body basses. The archtop models are also quite desirable with jazz artists who appreciate quality vintage instruments. | |
