 GIBSON | | CUSTOM SHOP: LES PAUL SERIES HISTORIC COLLECTION | One of the more recent considerations on currently manufactured Les Paul Reissues is weight - in this case, less is better! Many dealers are now listing the weights of individual guitars, as they can vary from between 8.5 and 9.5 lbs. During 2004, the Custom Shop began manufacturing a chambered body variation of the Les Paul Reissues, in which the body chambering was similar to the ES-336. The few select dealers who ordered these models referred to them as the "Cloud 9". During 2006, the name officially was changed to Chambered Reissue, and current dealers include Guitar Sale, located in South Bend, IN, and Wildwood, located in Louisville, CO. These chambered LPs are typically 1 1/2 lbs. lighter than a non-chambered instrument.
Current LP Reissue production utilizes bumblebee capacitors, CST linear pots, 'Burstbucker pickups with vintage style wiring wraps, and new dimension refinements.
During 2006, the Gibson Custom Shop released its Vintage Original Spec (VOS) Series of not only Les Pauls, but SGs as well. All VOS Series instruments utilize a high tech manufacturing process that guarantees ultra-precise fret placement with exacting specifications - this process also hand shapes the nut. VOS instruments also have neck profiles that accurately reflect the three most important time periods in Gibson's electric guitar history - the early 50s, late 50s, and 60s. These necks will be contoured a bit fuller, and will also have a rolled fingerboard binding. VOS Series instruments also use a proprietary process that includes the unique processes of staining, wet sanding, and hand-rubbing, which result in a finish that looks like a 40-year old vintage instrument. The hardware is also treated to so the finish resembles decades of natural oxidation. Additionally, the edges of the neck heel and headstock will also be rounded lightly, giving a worn-in appearance.
