ALEMBIC
MODEL IDENTIFICATION & GENERAL INFORMATION
Alembic models can be identified in the serial number: The first two digits indicate the year built, and the letter codes directly after the first two digits indicate the model. As the body style, peghead style, and electronic/hardware configurations and combinations may vary from instrument to instrument due to Alembic's numerous options, identification can be most easilymade from this letter coding.
Furthermore, all series between 1972 and 1976 carry either an AE (Alembic Export General) or AC (Alembic Export Canada) stamp.
On new instruments, the serial number is stamped on the truss rod cover and also in the electronics cavity (Epic and Orion models have the number stamped in the back of the peghead and in the electronics cavity). On older instruments, the serial number is stamped directly on the ebony fingerboard below the 24th fret. Earliest Alembic models have serial numbers stamped on top of the headstock (for further dating of Alembic instruments, see the Serialization section in the back of this edition).
If an Alembic model is noted as "disc." (as in discontinued), it does not mean that the company will not build any more instruments to those specifications. It may mean that the model is not carried on the current price sheet. Seven-, eight-, ten-, twelve-string, and doubleneck configurations are currently available on some models as a "Call for Price Quote" listing. Even though certain models or configurations may not be currently offered by Alembic, the design templates are on storage for a customer's special order.
Alembic is really close to a true custom shop for guitars and basses. This means that every guitar is usually custom ordered with its own options. This also means every guitar has a different price point. When looking up a value on an Alembic, keep in mind the price shown is for the basic equipment. Options are going to add to the value. Every instrument needs to be treated seperately when determining value.
