WEISSENBORN | ACOUSTIC: SPANISH GUITARS | Spanish guitar models (and plectrum instruments; tenor bodies are smaller) are similar in dimension to a 12-fret Martin "0" size. Their bodies are also exactly the same dimensions as Kona Hawaiians, except for the Konasí unique 7th-fret neck joint. Weissenborn Spanish instruments are designated Styles A, B, C, and D, which parallel the Hawaiians 1, 2, 3, and 4. Weissenborn Spanish guitars feature X-bracing, and necks without truss rods. Spanish-neck Weissenborns tend to need neck re-sets (Weissenborn used a dovetail neck joint). Weissenborn Spanish guitars don't sound as distinctively different from other roundnecks as do the Weissenborn Hawaiians from other steels. However, because of their rarity, Weissenborn Spanish guitar prices run close to those of their corresponding Hawaiian models and not much less than the more numerous Martin koa Spanish models like the 0-18K and 0-28K. | STYLE A | - no body binding, three light-colored rings around the soundhole, single pearl-dot fret markers. Catalogs mention optional spruce top on Styles 1 and 2, but these are seen more often on early instruments.
STYLE B | - black body binding, rope marquetry around soundhole, French curve on end of fingerboard (unique to Style 2), light wood binding on fretboard, fancier fret marker pattern.
STYLE C | - rope (alternating angled light and dark wood marquetry) binding around top, soundhole and fretboard. Fretmarkers include double dots at 5 and 9, diamond or parallelogram at 12.
STYLE D | - similar to Style 3, but with rope binding around back and headstock.
