WEISSENBORN | ACOUSTIC: KONA HAWAIIANS | Konas seem to follow the general scheme as the Hawaiians, except a Style 2 with black body binding has never been reported. There are Konas with variations on Style 1: some examples have no body binding; others have white plastic binding around the top. Experts including George Gruhn tend to regard these white-bound examples as Style 1 variants rather than as a separate style. Several Style 1 Konas have spruce tops that are both bound and unbound. | STYLE 1 | - no body binding, three light-colored rings around the soundhole, single pearl-dot fret markers. Catalogs mention optional spruce top on Styles 1 and 2, but these are seen more often on early instruments.
STYLE 2 | - black body binding, rope marquetry around soundhole, French curve on end of fingerboard (unique to Style 2), light wood binding on fretboard, fancier fret marker pattern.
STYLE 3 | - rope (alternating angled light and dark wood marquetry) binding around top, soundhole and fretboard. Fretmarkers include double dots at 5 and 9, diamond or parallelogram at 12.
STYLE 4 | - similar to Style 3, but with rope binding around back and headstock.
