 20TH CENTURY | | Instruments previously produced by Regal (original company of Wulschner & Son) in the late 1890s through the mid-1900s. | Indianapolis retailer/wholesaler Emil Wulschner introduced the Regal line in the 1880s, and in 1896 opened a factory to build guitars and mandolins under the following three trademarks: Regal, 20th Century, and University. In the early 1900s, the 20th Century trademark was a sub-brand distributed by the Fred Gretsch Manufacturing Company. By 1920, the Fred Gretsch Mfg. Co. had settled into its new ten story building in Brooklyn, New York, and was offering music dealers a very large line of instruments that included banjos, mandolins, guitars, violins, drums, and other band instruments. Gretsch used both the 20th Century and Rex trademarks prior to introduction of the Gretsch trademark in 1933.
