SOBELL, STEFAN Instruments currently built in England. Represented in the U.S. by Acoustic Music in Guilford, CT. Luthier Stefan Sobell was a pioneer in the development of the "cittern" (similar to a long necked mandolin) in the early 1970s (the cittern proved popular in the British Celtic music revival). Sobell then changed to building acoustic guitars in the early 1980s. Currently he produces about twelve guitars a year, mostly flattops with slightly curved backs and soundboards (the top and back feature a cylindrical arch).
