SLINGERLAND | Instruments previously built in Chicago, ILfrom the mid-1930s to circa mid-1940s. | Slingerland is perhaps better known for the drums the company produced. The Slingerland Banjo and Drum Company was established in 1916 in Chicago. In terms of construction, a banjo and drum do have several similarities (the soundhead stretched over a circular frame and held by a retaining ring). The company introduced the Marvel line of carved top guitars in 1936. A catalog of the time shows that Slingerland guitars were also sold under various brand names such as Songster, College Pal, and May-Bell, as well as the Slingerland trademark (source: Tom Wheeler, American Guitars).
