 SHENANDOAH | | Instruments previously assembled from imported Japanese components in Nazareth, PA between 1983 and 1996. Distributed by the C.F. Martin Guitar Company of Nazarath, PA. | Shenandoah production began in 1983. Initially viewed as a way to offer entry level models for Martin dealers, Shenandoah models featured Japanese-built unfinished body and neck kits imported to the Martin plant for final assembly and finishing. However, Shenandoah guitars are not as ornate, and may feature different construction methods than the Martin models.
While this may have been cost effective to some degree, the labor intensive work of assembly and finishing at the Martin plant led Martin to considering producing the whole guitar in Nazareth - which led to the introduction of Martin's U.S.-built Road and 1 Series.
Instruments were produced in Japan and assembled in the U.S. between 1983 to 1993; full Japanese production was featured between 1994 and 1996. Shenandoah model codes add a -32 suffix after a Martin-style model designation. Thus, a D-1832 is Shenandoah's version of a D-18. Models carrying a CS prefix designation indicate a custom model, usually fancier than the standard version (custom models were built in limited runs of twenty-five instruments).
