MARTIN
Acoustic: Limited Edition Models Starting With A-D
Martin formally opened its Custom Shop in 1979. As production for the first five years focused on one-of-a-kind custom creations, a catalog for pricing and listed options was never published. Many production runs that feature specialty woods are simply stamped "Custom" on the neck block.
Between 1983 and 1987, some of Martin's rosewood models were built using Brazilian rosewood. These guitars were initially stamped with a V (Vintage) after the model code; after 1985 the guitars were stamped with a B (Brazilian). Some "B" models do not have vintage features; some "V" models do not have Brazilian rosewood, but have vintage features.
Beginning in 1995, Martin discontinued the Guitar of the Month/Year program, and introduced their Limited/Special Editions. The following models are listed in chronological sequence. For information on the D-16 Series Special (SP) Limited Editions, please refer to the subcategory located after the D (Dreadnought) Series.
The source material for Martin's older Custom Shop and Limited Edition models can be found in Jim Washburn and Richard Johnson's Martin Guitars: An Illustrated Celebration of America's Premier Guitarmaker, Rodale Books, 1997. Information and pricing on Martin's more recent Custom Shop production, including both Limited and Special Editions can be found in its magazine, The Sounding Board, published in January and July. It is highly recommended that you get these informative newsletters to keep abreast on what's happening with Martin's Custom Shop and regular production.
