This series was introduced in late 1996 with most production starting in 1997. The Special 16 Series featured the same woods and bracing that the regular 16 Series has, but added features including an abalone pearl rosette, a Style 45 multi-colored back inlay strip, and gold hardware. The Special 16 Series was initially offered as a limited edition and in 1997 only 2,500 guitars in the entire line were going to be produced, but production became more standard in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
