ACOUSTIC ARCHTOP MODELS
The models listed below have not been priced individually. In general, Hofner prices range as follows. Guitars produced between 1951 and 1964 (pre-Beatles era) are generally priced between $250 and $450. Instruments produced from the mid-'60s through the mid-'80s will command slightly more, usually in the $650-$850 range. As with any maker, prices are based on configuration, originality factor and condition. Used clean big-body hollowbody guitars had been advertised nationally for $750 to $950, with the more ornate models carrying an asking price of $1,500 to $2,200.
MODEL 455
- archtop hollowbody, laminated maple top, backand sides, rosewood fingerboard with white celluloid inlays, three-per-side tuners, blackand white celluloid binding on top, back,and f-holes, red-white celluloid inlays on headstock, white pickguard, lyre tailpiece, available in Cherry Red shaded finish, mfg. 1951-1968.
MODEL 455/S
- similar to Model 455 except in a single cutaway design, mfg. 1961-1970.
Model 455/S/B
- similar to 455/S except in Blonde finish, mfg. 1963-67.
MODEL 4550
- similar to Model 455 except features a larger archtop body, laminated maple top, backand sides, bound top, back, fingerboard,and f-holes, rosewood fingerboard, celluloid band position markers, white pickguard, three-per-side tuners, lyre tailpiece, Shaded Brown finish, also available in a single cutaway model (Model 4550/S), mfg. 1955-1966.
MODEL 456
- archtop hollowbody, flame maple backand sides, rosewood fingerboard, celluloid band position markers, bound top, back, fingerboardand f-holes, red, black, or white headstock, white pickguard, lyre tailpiece, three-per-side tuners, available in Dark Brown Sunburst finish or Blonde (Model 456/b), mfg. 1951-1961.
MODEL 457
- archtop hollowbody, nicely flamed maple backand sides, spruce top, bound top, back, fingerboardand f-holes, headstock decorated with gold-plated clefand staff, three-per-side tuners, celluloid band position markers, available in Brown Sunburst or Blonde finishes, Model 457/b, mfg. 1954-1994.
MODEL 458
- archtop hollowbody, laminated maple top and back, bound top, back, fingerboardand f-holes, celluloid band position markers, decorated headstock, three-per-side tuners, white pickguard, lyre tailpiece, available in highly polished Black finish, mfg. 1954-1966.
MODEL 461/S
- archtop hollowbody, single cutaway design, bound top, backand f-holes, additional small oval soundhole in the traditional location, harp tailpiece, three-per-side tuners, blackand white celluloid decoration on the headstock with stylized arrow, split trapezoid position markers, unusually shaped f-holes, available in highly polished Black finish only, mfg. 1954-1964.
MODEL 462
- archtop hollowbody, flamed maple backand sides, selected spruce top, elliptical sound holes, two-piece tailpiece, bound top, back, fingerboardand f-holes, headstock has gold plated clefand staff, celluloid band position markers (one wideand two narrow), three-per-side tuners, white pickguard, available in Light Brown Varnish finish, mfg. 1951 only.
Model 462/S
- similar to Model 462 except in a single cutaway design, available in Light Brown Varnish finish, mfg. 1954-1970.
MODEL 463
- archtop hollowbody, sapeli mahogany backand sides, selected spruce top, bound mahogany fingerboard, split trapezoid position markers, wooden inlaysand celluloid bindings on topand back, wooden inlays around f-holes, harp tailpiece, three-per-side tuners, white pickguard, available in Shaded Brown finish, mfg. 1952-1994.
MODEL 464/S
- archtop hollowbody, single cutaway design, spruce top, flame maple backand sides, bound top, back, fingerboardand f-holes, eliptical sound holes, one additional rhombic soundhole located in the traditional position, celluloid band position markers (two wideand two narrow), lyre tailpiece, three-per-side tuners, white pickguard, available in Dark Wine Red finish, mfg. 1954-1968.
MODEL 465
- archtop hollowbody, well selected fine spruce top, rosewood backand sides, ebony fingerboard, woodand celluloid bindings on top, back, fingerboardand f-holes, MOP headstock inlays (bell-flowers) and position markers (one narrow rectangle flanked by two pentagons that resemble arrowheads), lucite pickguard, three-per-side tuners, lyre tailpiece, Shaded Brown finish, mfg. 1951-1962.
MODEL 470/S
- archtop hollowbody, single cutaway design, selected spruce top, best quality flame maple backand sides, wooden flower inlays on back, ebony fingerboardand headstock, bound top, back, fingerboardand f-holes, three-per-side tuners, MOP headstock inlays (lillies) and position markers (one narrow rectangle flanked by two pentagons that resemble arrowheads), rosewood pickguard, available in high polish Blonde finish, mfg. 1961-1994.
MODEL 471
- archtop hollowbody, enlarged body, selected spruce top, flame maple back and sides, florentine cutaway, celluloid bound topand back, ebony fingerboard with split trapezoid MOP inlays, elaborate headstock inlays, three-per-side tuners, harp tailpiece, Blonde finish, mfg. 1969-1977.
