GILBERT GUITARS, JOHN AND BILL
Instruments currently built outside San Francisco, CA.
Luthier John Gilbert built his first classical guitar in 1965 as a hobby. By 1974, after performing repair work in addition to his guitar building, Gilbert was concentrating on building full time. In 1991, Gilbert was joined by his son Bill. Gilbert's classical guitars have been favored by a large number of professional players. The design features a responsive projection of volume and tone coloration that depends on the guitarist's playing. Between 1974 and 1991, John Gilbert built an estimated 140 guitars. Both Gilberts build between six and ten guitars annually. Bill has produced forty-two guitars now under his own name.
