GRETSCH | ACOUSTIC FLATTOPS: 1930S-1970S MFG. | Gretsch first produced flattop acoustics around the same time they introduced archtop acoustics in 1933. However, the flattops weren't nearly as popular and very little is known about the earliest models. These models include the Broadkaster, Castillian, Rhumba, and the Number 40 Hawaiian model. Gretsch (and part of Baldwin) also produced some little-known models during the late 1960s and 1970s. Some of these models include the Deluxe and the Supreme as well as two unnamed models: a 12-string and a jumbo. Gretsch flattop guitars were built very poorly and cheaply and they didn't sound very good - a stark contrast to their electric counterparts. Therefore, they aren't very collectible in the used marketplace. | BURL IVES (MODEL 6004) | - spruce top, mahogany back and sides, round soundhole with nine-ply ring, double bound top, mahogany neck, 14/19-fret rosewood fingerboard with pearloid dot inlay, black peghead face with Gretsch and Burl Ives logos, three-per-side tuners with plastic buttons, rosewood bridge with black pins, tortoiseshell teardrop-shaped pickguard, available in Natural finish, 14.25 in. body width, mfg. 1952-54. |
