GRD (GUITAR RESEARCH AND DESIGN)
ACOUSTIC
The 1978 GRD brochure featured six acoustic models, but also mentioned six- and ten-string classic guitars, baroque, flamenco, and smaller-sized steel stringed instruments, which were available on a custom basis. All braces are fully scalloped, tapered, and float free of the linings. The phenolic fretboard is relieved over the soundboard. Upper linings are individual tentalones, back linings are solid bent rosewood. The nut and saddle are solid brass (interchangeable saddles of bone, phenolic, and epoxy graphite were available in special order). The body/neck connection was a Spanish-style foot and shelf neck/body joint.
GRD acoustics feature a solid rosewood back and sides, peghead overlay, back linings, center web, bindings, and trim. The standard soundboard was spruce; cedar was optional. GRD necks are Honduran mahogany with the head and arm spliced instead of being band sawn from one piece. Headstocks featured three-per-side gold-plated Schaller tuners.
On-board electronics featured a transducer pickup and tone control system that required no preamp-- one pickup was mounted beneath the bridge, and the second was mounted beneath the fretboard. The on-board electronics featured volume, tone, and balance controls. The output jacks were flush mounted, and the guitars had Strap Lock fittings.
The model F and F 1 were full-sized acoustics with a jumbo-esque (tight waist) body style, 660 mm scale, and 21-fret fingerboard. The F 1 model has a single Florentine-style cutaway. The T and T 1 acoustics were full sized models with a dreadnought-style body, 630 mm scale, and 21-fret fingerboard. The T 1 model has a single Florentine-style cutaway. The shallow body S 1 and S 2 models have a 645 mm scale, and a 21-fret fingerboard. The S 1 has a single Florentine-style cutaway; the S 2 is a double (dual) cutaway body.
Prices are still relatively unknown for used GRD models because so few of them are circulating in the market.
