D'ANGELICO | D'ANGELICO HISTORY | The publisher wishes to express thanks to Mr. Jim Fisch, co-author of Epiphone: The House of Stathopoulo, and senior contributing editor for 20th Century Guitar, for the following D'Angelico information. Although D'Angelico maintained a relative amount of consistency in his production, an overview of his instruments shows that the design of his guitars was representative of his evolution as a luthier, the demands of his customers, and the external influences of other, commercial guitar manufacturers. Since he did very little in the way of advertising and publishing catalogs, his ledger books (Reprinted in Paul William Schmidt's Acquired of the Angels and Akira Tsumura's American Guitars) have become the bible for D'Angelico collectors. In spite of the fact that these are incomplete and often contain puzzling references known only to the maker or his clients, the bulk of his work -1,164 guitars - is represented and accurately dated. However, since some early examples lack any manufacturing dates, the subsequent list of models notes the first date entered for a particular model, but it is not necessarily the first appearance of the model on the consecutive serial number list or the first example to be produced. Reference will be made to earlier undated examples where necessary. | |
