LABEL IDENTIFICATION/SERIALIZATION
Label Identification
1975-1979: Models do not have a label; instead, there is a signature in ink on the inside back strip.
1979-1984: Light brown oval label with brown ink marked Bill Collings, Luthier and illustrated with logs floating in a river.
1984-1989: Darker brown oval label with brown ink marked Bill Collings, Luthier and illustrated with logs and guitars floating in a river.
1989-Present: Light brown oval label with black ink marked Collings, Austin, Texas.
Flattop Serialization:
1975-1987: Guitars do not posses a serial number. Most are marked with a handwritten date on the underside of the top. Some guitars from 1987 may have a serial number.
1988-Present: Guitars began a consecutive numbering series that began with number 175. The serial number is stamped on the neck block. Serial numbers had reached 4700 by 1999.
Archtop Serialization:
Before 1991: Archtops before 1991 had their own separate serialization.
1991-Present: Archtops are numbered with a two-part serial number. The first number indicates the archtop as part of the general company serialization, and the second number indicates the ranking in the archtop series list.
