BAUER
Guitars previously built between the late 1880s and 1910 in Philadelphia, PA. Also see S.S. Stewart.
George Bauer established himself as a guitar and mandolin builder during the late 1880s and early 1890s. Banjo builder S.S. Stewart and Bauer began building instruments under the Bauer & Stewart name. After Stewart died in 1898, Bauer formed a partnership with Stewart's sons to produce instruments under the S.S. Stewart name. Bauer continued to produce instruments under the Bauer & Stewart, S.S. Stewart, and Acme Professional (Sears & Roebuck house brand) names until his death in 1910. The Bauer & Stewart company was sold shortly after Bauer died, and the name was never used again. The Stewart name has been sold several times and used on a variety of instruments ever since.
